Richard was born in 1461 in Ridward, Hampstall, Staffordshire, England, the son of John Cotton and Mary de la Pole.
He died in 1497. The place is not known.
His wife was Joan Brereton. They were married, but the date and place have not been found. Their seven known children were sir Robert (c1485-1519), Matilda (1488-1551), Eleanor (c1490-1517), Catherine (c1490-1535), Isabel (c1493-?), Richard (c1492-?) and Thomas (1495-1506).
