Richard was born about 1408 in Hamstall, Staffordshire, England, the son of William Cotton but his mother is unknown.
His wife was Johanna de Venables. They were married, but the date and place have not been found. Their three known children were Richard (1431-1461), John (1434-1456) and William (c1438-1455).
