Note 1

PIERRE TREMBLAY - "Auteur de la Branche de la Nouvelle-France".

The Ancestor of the Largest French Canadian Family -

He was the only head of family with that name who came from France, he is the ancestor of all the Tremblay in America! At the age of 21 years old, Pierre arrived in Quebec around the 5th or 6th August 1647 on the Marguerite d'Angouleme, a sailboat coming from La Rochelle, into the port of Quebec to establish himself in the colony.

The first time his name was found in Canada was on the parish registers of Notre-Dame-de-Quebec at the date of October 1657, his marriage to Ozanne Achon. He was 31 years old and she was 24 years old. These two young people who married 10 years older than the average age at that period, had no idea that they would be the foundation of the largest family of all the french Canadian nation. He appeared to have earned his living working in M. Juchereau's store, and on the Warf of Quebec city where he was handling the merchandise arriving from France for the settlers.

Pierre Tremblay and his wife Ozanne Achon settled along the coast of Beaupre, now called L‘Ange Gardien and went into farming. He was given his first piece of land on April 4 1659 (2 arpents and one half) by Jean de Lauson, "Senechal" of the Nouvelle France, son of governor Jean de Lauson, and who was killed by the Iroquois at l'Île d'Orleans on June 22, 1661.

They had 13 children, eleven of them lived a healthy life. Four sons married, Pierre, Michel, Jacques and Louis. All four had large families: Pierre, fifteen children, Michel fourteen , Jacques, six and Louis fourteen. Pierre, Michel and Louis settled on the new land of Baie Saint-Paul, and Jacques remained on the family land which he inherited. His decendants multiplied at l‘Ange-Gardien, while the decendants of the other three brothers soon covered the north coast and specially Baie Saint-Paul and the surroundings. Today, (1990's) the counties of Charlevoix, Saguenay, Chicoutimi, Lac Saint-Jean and Roberval are literally covered with Tremblay families.
