Robert was born about 1325 in Innermeath, Argyllshire, Scotland, the son of sir James Stewart but his mother is unknown.
He died in 1388 in Halidon Hill, Berwick-on-Tweed, Northumberland, England.
He had two marriages/partners. His first wife was Isabel Margaret MacDuff. They were married, but the date and place have not been found. Their three known children were sir John (c1350-1421), Katherine (?-?) and sir Robert (?-1403).
His second wife was Catherine MacDougall. They were married, but the date and place have not been found. They had no known children.
