Gwilym was born about 1399 in Newport, Gwynllwg Monmouthshire, Cymru, the son of Ieuen ap Jenkin Kemeys and Joan verch Ieuan.

He died in 1458 in Gwent.

His wife was Elizabeth de la Bere. They were married, but the date and place have not been found. Their four known children were William (c1445->1505), Thomas (c1431-1493), Sibyl (c1445-?) and Katherine (c1431-1462).
