James was born in 1496 in Cork, the son of Piers Butler and Margaret Fitzgerald.

He died on 28 OCT 1546 in Ely House, Holborn, London, England.

His wife was Joan Fitzgerald, who he married on BEF 21 DEC 1532. The place has not been found. Their eight known children were Thomas (>1531-1614), sir Edmund (1534-1602), Ellen (1538-?), John (c1546-1570), Edward (?-?), Walter (?-1560), James (?-?) and Piers (?-?).
