Edmund was born about 1420 in Knocktopher castle, co. Kilkenny, Eire , the son of sir Richard Welles Butler and Catherine O'Reilly.
He died on 13 JUN 1464 in Black castle, Thurles, Tipperary, Eire.
His wife was Giles O'Carroll. They were married, but the date and place have not been found. Their four known children were sir James (c1437-1487), Walter (?-?), John (?-?) and Catherine (?-?).

Edmund first came to attention in 1443 when he instigated the murder of Finan and Dermot MacGillapadraig, the sons of the King of the ruling Irish clan in Ossory.
