Having been disappointed several times by my rental accomodations at the Beach area of Toronto and very shell-shocked by an abusive tenant, Robin Millar, in the apartment below me on Willow Avenue, I took an apartment near the school on the recommendation of a colleague, Mark Richardson.
Apartment 2906, twenty-seven floors above the ground floor offered light, air, adequate space, and some views to Lake Ontario. It featured hardwood floors with a clause in the lease forcing the tenants to carpet the floors.
It was on the Western edge of St Jamestown, then the most densely populated area in Canada. The area was rapidly deteriorating both physically and demographically. It was becoming dangerous to travel at night in the area.
The people in the apartment above had small children and refused to carpet the floors. The kid(s) had some sort of pull-toy which made quite a racket during the day. The area did not have any place for children, so they were in the apartment at all times. The wife insisted on wearing high-heel shoes with hard soles and heels at all times. Perhaps her husband thought it somehow erotic, but many of the neighbours for several floors below had had words with this couple.
The St Jamestown area continued to deteriorate in the approximately 8 years I stayed. I was quite relieved to move to Vancouver in 1989.
Near the end of June, 1989, I removed the back seat of my gold 1984 Jetta, jammed in layers of potted plants, luggage, litter box, cuttings and Morgan le Fay and screamed out of the Big Smoke for parts west. The back seat went west with my other belongings on a moving van. I arranged for John Taylor to sign for me for a 3 bedroom apartment in the Bonaventure Apartments in the West End of Vancouver.
The first photo I took of that trip was in Windsor. Follow along in the photos to see the trip.
