Gerald was born in 1344 in Shanid castle, Limerick, Eire, the son of Maurice FitzThomas FitzGerald and Aveline FitzNicholas.

He died in 1398 in Desmond, co. Kerry, Eire.

He had two marriages/partners. His first wife was Eleanor le Boteler, who he married in 1359. The place has not been found. Their seven known children were John (?-1398), Maurice (?-?), James (?-c1463), Robert (?-?), Joan (?-?), Katherine (?-?) and Amy (?-?).

His second wife is not known. They were married, but the date and place have not been found. Their only known child was Ellice (?-?).
