Gwilym was born in 1327, the son of Jenkin ap Adam and Gwenlian verch Aron. The place is not known.
He died in 1377 in Perth Hir, Monmouthshire, Cymru.
His wife was Gwenllian verch Hywel. They were married, but the date and place have not been found. Their five known children were Dafydd ap Gwilym (1384-1411), Philip Fychan ap Gwilym (c1370-?), Jonet ferch Gwilym (1341-?), sir Thomas ap Gwyllym (c1362-1438) and Gwenllian verch Gwilym (c1364-?).
