Richard was born on 29 JUN 1344 in Suddon Manor, Wincanton, Somerset, England, the son of sir Thomas Champernowne and Eleanor de Rohant.

He died about 1394 in Modbury, Devonshire, England.

He had two marriages/partners. His first wife was Alice de Astley. They were married, but the date and place have not been found. Their two known children were sir Alexander (c1382-1441) and Otho (c1380-<1422).

His second wife was Katherine d'Aubigny. They were married, but the date and place have not been found. Their four known children were Hugh (c1390-?), sir Richard (c1392-1420), John (c1394-1435) and Margaret (1396-1434).
