Robert was born in 1267 in Auchterhouse, Forfarshire (now Angus), Scotland, the son of Patrick Ramsay but his mother is unknown.
His wife is not known. They were married, but the date and place have not been found. Their two known children were sir Malcolm (?-c1365) and Marjory (c1292-1357).
