Paon was born about 1310 in Guînes, Pas-de-Calais, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France , the son of Payen de Roët but his mother is unknown.

He died about 1380 in Gand.

His wife was Catherine d'Avesnes. They were married, but the date and place have not been found. Their four known children were Katherine (1350-1403), Philippe (c1346-c1387), Isabel (?-?) and Walter (?-?).
