William was born about 1304 in Crichton, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland, the son of John de Crichton but his mother is unknown.

He died in 1398 in Crichton castle, Pathhead, East Lothian, Scotland.

He had two marriages/partners. His first wife was Margaret Burnston. They were married, but the date and place have not been found. Their two known children were sir John (>1330-1423) and sir Stephen (c1345->1433/34).

His second wife was Isabel de Ros. They were married, but the date and place have not been found. Their two known children were Edward (c1331-?) and Thomas (c1331-?).
