Benedict was born about 1330 in Grimstrup, Hunseby, the son of Benedict II von Ahlefeldt and Benedicte af Sædinge.

He died after 1398. The place is not known.

He had two marriages/partners. His first wife was Catharine Niclausdatter Limbek. They were married, but the date and place have not been found. Their three known children were Claus I (c1359-1404), Henrik (?-1404) and Benedict IV (?->1411).

His second wife was Ide Hartvigsdatter Krummedige. They were married, but the date and place have not been found. Their five known children were Henneke (?->1387), Carl (?->1398), Volf (?->1424), Ditlev (?-1432) and Henrik (c1353-c1430).
