Robert was born in 1369 in Thirlestane castle, Lauder, Berwickshire, Scotland, the son of sir John Maitland and Elizabeth Dunbar.
He died in 1434 in Lethington/Lennoxlove Tower, Haddington, East Lothian, Scotland.
His wife was Marion Abernethy. They were married, but the date and place have not been found. Their five known children were Agnes (c1395-?), William (?-c1471), Robert (?-<1434), James (?-?) and Margaret Agnes (c1385-1421).
