Jean was the son of Louis II (III) de Dampierre and Yve de Lieu. The date and place of his birth have not been found.

He died on 28 SEP 1396 in Nikopolis (Nicopolis, Nikápoly), Bulgaria .

His wife was Wilhelmine de Nevele, who he married in ABT 1388. The place has not been found. Their only known child was Jean II (c1390-c1420).
