Richard was born about 1421 in Hartley Castle, Kirkby Stephen, Westmoreland, England, the son of sir Richard Musgrave and Elizabeth Betham.
His wife was Mary Stapleton. They were married, but the date and place have not been found. Their only known child was Eleanor (c1440-?).
