Adolf was born on 15 DEC 1588 in Schwerin, the son of Johann VII zu Mecklenburg-Schwerin and Sophie von Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf.

He died on 27 FEB 1658 in Schwerin.

He had two marriages/partners. His first wife was Anna Maria van Oost-Friesland, who he married in 1622. The place has not been found. Their eight known children were Christian I Ludwig (1623-1692), Sofie Agnes (1625-1694), Karl (1626-1670), Anna Maria (1627-1669), Johann Georg (1629-1675), Hedwig (1630-1631), Gustav Rudolf (1632-1670) and Juliane (1633-1634).

His second wife was Marie Katharine von Braunschweig-Dannenberg, who he married in ABT 1635. The place has not been found. Their eleven known children were Juliane Sibylla (1636-1701), Friedrich (1638-1688), Christine (1639-1693), Bernhard Sigismund (1641-1641), Auguste (1643-1644), Marie Elisabeth (1646-1713), Anna Sofie (1647-1726), Adolf Ernst (1650-1651), Philipp Ludwig (1652-1655), Heinrich Wilhelm (1653-1653) and Adolf II Friedrich (1658-1708).
