Karl was born in 1516 in Bruxelles (BrĂ¼ssel, Brussels), Belgique , the son of Eitel III Friedrich von Hohenzollern and Johanna van Witthem.
He died in 1576 in Schloss Sigmaringen.
His wife was Anna von Baden-Durlach, who he married in 1537 in Pforzheim. Their fifteen known children were Ferfried (1538-1556), Ernst (1539-1539), Jakob (1543-1543), Marie (1544-1611), Eitel I Friedrich (1545-1605), Karl II (1547-1606), Johanna (1548-1604), Marie Jakobe (c1549-1578), Leonore (1551->1605), Christof (1552-1592), Magdalene (1553->1571), Joachim (1554-1587), Christine (1555-?), Amalie (1557-1603) and Kunigunde (1558-1595).
