Nikolai was born on 06 JUL 1796 in Zarskoje Selo, the son of Pavel I Petrovich Romanov and Sophie Dorothee Auguste Luise von Württemberg.

He died on 02 MAR 1855 in St Petersburg.

His wife was Friederike Luise Charlotte Wilhelmine von Preußen, who he married on 13 JUL 1817 in Winter Palace, St. Petersburg, Russia. Their seven known children were Aleksandr II Nikolaevich (1818-1881), Maria Nikolaievna (1819-1876), Olga Nikolaevna (1822-1892), Alexandra Nikolaevna (1825-1844), Konstantin Nikolayevich (1827-1892), Nicholas Nikolaevich (1831-1891) and Michael Nikolaevich (1832-1909).
