Friedrich was born on 12 SEP 1837 in Bessungen, the son of Karl Wilhelm Ludwig von Hessen-Darmstadt and Marie Elisabeth Karoline Viktoria von Preußen.

He had two marriages/partners. His first wife was Alice Maud Mary von Sachsen-Coburg und Gotha, who he married on 1 JUL 1862 in Osborne House, Isle of Wight, England. Their seven known children were Viktoria Alberta Elisabeth Mathilde Marie (1863-1950), Elizabeth (1864-1918), Irene (1866-1953), Ernst Ludwig Karl Albrecht Wilhelm (1868-1937), Friedrich (1870-1873), Alexandra Fedorovna (1872-1918) and Marie (1874-1878).

His second wife was Alexandrine von Hutten-Czapska, who he married in 1884. The place has not been found. They had no known children.
