En 1196, elle fait reconnaître son fils Arthur, seulement âgé de huit ans, comme duc par une assemblée générale de l'aristocratie. En réaction de cet évènement qui contrecarrait ses desseins, Richard Cœur-de-Lion la fait enlever par son propre mari. La duchesse est gardée prisonnière à Pontorson ou à Teillay.
