Elle épouse en première noces le comte d’Anjou Foulques IV le Rechin. Mais le roi de France Philippe Ier (fils d’Anne de Kiev et d’Henri Ier) s’éprend d'elle - elle reste en effet célèbre pour sa grande beauté - et répudie sa première femme Berthe de Hollande, pour enlever Bertrade, malgré l’opposition d’Yves, évêque de Chartres, et l’excommunication prononcée par le pape. Elle épouse donc le roi et devient reine en 1092. Ceci crée de vives tensions entre le roi et le pape Urbain II, jusque vers 1104.
