Joseph was born in 1640 in Rouen, Seine-Maritime, Haute-Normandie, France , the son of Jacques Lamy and Barbe le Chevalier.

His wife was Marie-Madeleine Chevrainville dit Fontaine, who he married on 22 OCT 1663 in Basilique-Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Québec QC . Their four known children were Marie (1670-1716), Pierre (1667-1757), Catherine (1679-1750) and Louise (1682-1764).
