Walter was born about 1296 in Dundonald castle, Irvine, Ayrshire, Scotland, the son of James Stewart and Egidia de Burgh.

He died on 09 APR 1327 in Bathgate castle, Bathgate, West Lothian, Scotland.

He had three marriages/partners. His first wife was Alice Erskine. They were married, but the date and place have not been found. Their only known child was Jean (?-?).

His second wife was Marjory Bruce, who he married in ABT JUN 1315. The place has not been found. Their only known child was Robert II (1316-1390).

His third wife was Isabel de Graham. They were married, but the date and place have not been found. Their three known children were Egidia (c1326-c1406), sir John (c1318-1380) and sir Andrew (c1322-?).
