Muttalib was the son of ‘Abd al-Manâf ibn Qusai and Atika of Qays Aylan. The date and place of his birth have not been found.

Muttalib succeeded his brother Hashim and took care of his nephew Shaiba ibn Hashim, who became known as "‘Abd al-Muttalib" (servant of Muttalib) after that.
