He died on 29 AUG 1287 in Newmarket on Fergus, co. Clare, Eire.
His wife was Julian FitzMaurice FitzGerald, who he married in FEB 1275. The place has not been found. Their only known child was Maud (c1276-1326/27).

On 26 January 1276 he was granted the lordship of Thomond by Edward I of England; he spent the next eight years attempting to conquer it from the O'Brien dynasty, kings of Thomond.
